MARY TURNER , RN
Nurse Manager

Bacon County Hospital and Health System

ATLANTA – Mary Turner, RN, a nurse manager at Bacon County Hospital and Health System in Alma , was presented the Georgia Hospital Association's (GHA) Hospital Hero Award at a recent awards banquet honoring the extraordinary personal and professional commitments hospital employees statewide.

The Bacon County Hospital employee was one of 11 Georgia hospital employees honored at the inaugural event in Atlanta .

Turner has served in many roles in her more than 30 years with Bacon County Hospital and Health System – from certified nurse assistant to staff RN to charge nurse. As nurse manager, Turner supervises all nursing departments including medical/surgical, ICU, ER and nursery and ensures that each department maintains a supportive, family-like atmosphere.

Making rounds with the physicians each morning, Turner explains procedures and diagnostic test results in a way that calms fears and is easily understood by patients and their families. Often bringing a favorite meal or beverage or a pair of warm booties when she visits, Turner goes the extra mile to make her patients comfortable. Her sensitivity and warmth has comforted many grieving families and provided needed guidance during after-death arrangements.

Turner once came to the aid of a woman who found herself stranded and alone in Alma . The woman was traveling with her trucker husband when he died en route. She had no friends or family nearby, but fortunately, she found a new friend in Turner. Turner made arrangements to have the truck moved. She found a hotel that would allow the woman's dog and coordinated staff donations to pay for the room. Turner continued to call and visit the woman to ensure she was not alone during her time of grief.
