Medical Center of Central Georgia

ATLANTA – Walter Collins Hansen, Jr., a paramedic at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon , was presented the Georgia Hospital Association's (GHA) Hospital Hero Award at a recent awards banquet honoring the personal and professional commitment of hospital employees statewide.

The MCCG employee was one of 11 Georgia hospital employees honored at the inaugural event in Atlanta .

Collins Hanson responded to what he thought was a routine call by a patient suffering, but soon after he arrived on the scene, he knew something was very wrong. Hanson's quick thinking and attention to detail helped save the life of a newborn who was about to be abandoned by its mother.

Immediately clamping the already-cut umbilical cord, Hanson began administering artificial ventilation. He continued to warm and provide stimulation to the baby until the baby's color and pulse rate returned to normal. Hanson's quick thinking and attention to detail saved the newborn's life.
