The St. Mary's employee was one of 11 Georgia hospital employees honored at the inaugural event in Atlanta .
Even 38,000 feet in the air, Nicolaus provided life-saving care. While in flight, Nicolaus worked quickly to help a dangerously hyperglycemic passenger whose insulin pump had broken. With minimal equipment and extremely cramped working conditions, she remained clam and helped a passenger who could easily have died or suffered permanent disability without the care she provided.
Nicolaus is known by patients and the hospital's medical staff for her compassion and skill. When she is not supervising St. Mary's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Nicolaus can be found volunteering at the Athens Nurses Clinic, a care facility for indigent and homeless residents who have no regular access to health care.
