The WellStar physician was one of 11 health care practitioners honored at the inaugural event in Atlanta .
Haldeman came to Marietta in the early 1990s as one of only two critical care physicians at Kennestone Hospital , caring for the needs of the hospital's most acutely ill patients – those often left without much hope of recovery. He served as president of Kennestone Hospital and as a member of the WellStar Board of Trustees, which laid the foundation for his transition into an administrative role at WellStar.
At WellStar, Haldeman developed a medical management program for medically fragile patients with conditions requiring a high level of care, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, adult and pediatric asthma and high-risk obstetrics long before they were common practice.
He pioneered several programs that helped advance chronic and multiple disease management not only for WellStar but for Georgia . As a result of his work, WellStar was the first hospital in the country to be certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) for multiple disease management. A leader amongst his peers, Haldeman also helped forge new ground in the realm of hospital and physician relationships and was instrumental in forming a physicians group within WellStar.
